Program Notes
Tchaikovsky completed his Children's Album in 1878. It contains 24 little pieces. Some of the pieces are purely lyrical. Other numbers have national color. Among these there is a paraphrase of the well-known Kamarinskaya. The book concludes with a liturgical chant entitled At Church. While he was working on the score of Romeo and Juliet, Prokofiev had written short piano pieces for children. By autumn he had completed twelve compositions which were published in an album entitled "Music for Children". Between 1944 and 1945 Shostakovich composed a Children's Notebook op. 69 for piano. This Notebook was written for the composer's daughter Galya. From 1952 - 62 he added another children's piano album to the Notebook, a set of six slightly longer pieces, Dances of the Dolls. All these albums belong to the fine Russian tradition of celebrated composers writing original piano music for children.
