Mark Gurovsky, piano

Through his inspired performances, Mark Gurovsky has won a special place in the vanguard of today's virtuoso pianists. His rare combination of eloquent musicianship and dramatic virtuosity has brought him raves from audiences and critics alike from around the world.

Mark Gurovsky studied at the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Special Music School for gifted students where he was a student of Asya Rubin. When he was twelve years old, he was awarded an opportunity to perform Haydn's Piano Concerto with the New York Philharmonic in concert while the orchestra was on tour in Leningrad.

Mark Gurovsky studied at the Leningrad State Conservatory with the eminent teacher Samary Savshinsky. He received his Ph.D. from the Conservatory while studying with Pavel Serebryakov.

He performed as soloist with the Leningrad Chamber Orchestra throughout the former Soviet Union and on tour in Eastern and Western Europe in more than 200 concerts. He appeared with the Leningrad Philharmonic, Novosibirsk Philharmonic, Czech Radio and Television Orchestra, and the Chamber Orchestra of Estonia under the button of such conductors as Karl Eliasberg, Arvid Jansons, Vakhtang Jordania, Vladislav Tchernushenko, and Arnold Katz to name only a few. Concerto and recital tours have taken him to Poland, Hungary, East Germany and Czechoslovakia.

Mark Gurovsky has been awarded top prize in the 1977 Russian National Competition where he also received an award for the best performance of Tchaikovsky's music. He has shared the first prize with conductor Semyon Bychkov in the Centennial Jubilee of Sergei Rachmaninov's Pianists and Conductors Competition in Moscow and was a prize winner in the Frederic Chopin Competition held in New York City. In 1980 he won first prize and Gold medal in the Ninth International Piano Competition "Citta di Senigallia" in Italy. As a result he was offered a tour of Italy, France, Germany, San Marino and other European countries.

In 1993 Mr. Gurovsky gave his New York recital debut at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall. Concert tours in Canada followed and eventually Mr. Gurovsky became a resident of Toronto. Since then he has appeared in concerts throughout Canada and the United States. He has performed in such series and festivals as the Hart House University of Toronto Series, Colorado Music Festival, Montreal Music Festival, CBC Festival in Toronto, Wilrid Laurier University Series, and many others. Mr. Gurovsky has appeared on radio and television in Russia, Italy, Germany, Canada, and the United States.
