Valery Gradow studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Leonid Kogan. He was a prizewinner at the Sibelius Competition, and was presented with the Londoner Harriet Cohen Award and the International Music Prize in 1966. While in Russia, he toured extensively throughout the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc countries and recorded for "Melodia" while teaching at the Moscow Pedagogical Institute and Gorky Conservatory.

He left Russia in 1972 and settled in Germany where he is a Professor of violin at the Hochschule fur Musik in Mannheim. Concerto and recital tours have taken him to Italy, England, Switzerland, Spain, France, Holland, Korea, the United States, and South America. He appeared as soloist with such orchestras as the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, and others. He conducted master-classes in Paris, New York, Moscow, Seoul and at the International Menuhin Academy in Switzerland. Mr. Gradow is acclaimed for his interest in contemporary music and several works have been written especially for him.
